“Transgressors Stumble in Them”

“Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them.” Hosea 14:9

As believers, there is something that we have come to realize about Scripture and the word of God. As we grow in our faith, we come to understand that what the Bible teaches us - and ultimately what God teaches us - is right. Peter says that, “we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles – when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.” He goes on to say, “In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.”

Hosea and Peter bring up an important point. Those who are discerning, prudent and wise can see the “rightness” of God’s ways. When we see that rightness, we walk in it. However, there are going to be those around us who think it strange that we have decided to follow God’s ways, and they “stumble in them.” Paul said it is impossible for “those who are in the flesh” to please God (Rom. 8:8).

Remember as you are being maligned and ridiculed that some will never understand the righteousness of God and will continue to stumble over it. It is our duty to continue to understand and know the ways of the Lord, and shine the light of His righteousness in spite of what others might say, in hopes that “they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Tim. 2:26). - David
